I love films as the whole production can literally transport you into another world. Creatives share this unique gift, they can lift people where they could not go without the help. I know so many people who love a particular song or film because it evokes a memory, a feeling. Yet how many creatives give up their pursuit because circumstances seem to be pitted against them. Maybe its time to awaken the dream, maybe its time to dream bigger.
Thomas Anderson is a normal person, with a job at a computer software company, but in the night, he is online, nicknamed Neo.
Neo is an anagram of the one.
He is like many people today searching for meaning and he uses his talent to find it. He searches for someone he heard about, someone that knows something. Something mysterious enough to keep him guessing and searching at the same time, what is the Matrix? We know there is more we sense it and at times it seems more real. We want answers, we need answers, why am I here? What can I contribute?
A man named Morpheus, the man who has the answers, challenges Neo into taking the hardest decision of his life, to find out the true reality. Morpheus challenges Neo into discovering his potential and become his best self. He opens Neo up to the truth behind the Matrix, giving him a choice; there is always a choice.
In the Matrix humans live in a world that’s an illusion, manipulated by forces beyond our control. Slaves born into a prison you cannot taste or see or touch, a prison for your mind. Like Neo we are here because there is something. We cannot explain or describe it, but we feel it. We feel it every day, there’s got to be more, and there is something more. You don’t know what it is, but it’s there, another reality. You may have accessed it in a dream, a passing thought but you know it’s there.
The Matrix is described as being all around us. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth. Inside the Matrix you see, men and women defined by what they do. Like pawns in a chess board they are convinced they do because it gives them economic worth. You have to understand; most of the people are not ready to be unplugged.
The securities in the matrix far outweigh the risks for them. And many of them are so dependent on the system that they will fight to protect it. Fight for a position that is eroding their quality time with their families.
Neo is like us; the direction of his life resembles our lives on a quest to fulfil our potential. Before he swallowed the red pill, Neo was given another choice. Trinity points a gun at Neo and says he has to surrender fully before they take him to Morpheus. In defiance Neo goes to get out the car, as he opens it, Trinity asks him to trust her. Why should he trust someone he does not know? The next step has a risk attached to it. Whenever we step into our dream we step into the unknown. We walk where feet have not walked before. We make the invisible visible, but it always starts with a step of faith. When your open to losing something so you can gain something, you’re ready to take that leap. It requires you stepping outside yourself, outside your comfort zone. Your willingness to take that leap will determine how rewarding your future can become.
Looking down a familiar road Trinity says, “Because you have been down there, Neo. You know that road. You know exactly where it goes, and I know that’s not where you want to be. There is only one choice. You know what it’s like to get up, go to work, come home and repeat.
In the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins is also comfortable with his life. He has his house and his valued possessions. Like many of us he gets his sense of self-worth from what he has and his social standing. As Bilbo’s life plods along he receives a knock at the door and the wizard Gandalf offers him the chance of an adventure. Bilbo’s negative internal voice shouts louder than the dreams he once had. As time goes by, he gets another knock at the door and this time the adventure is thrust upon him. Even in the midst his internal dialogue is negative. We don’t do this, what would happen to me? Even after Gandalf and the dwarves leave Bilbo is battling his internal voice. Should he walk in his dream and find true meaning for his life. Should he step out of his comfort zone and truly make a difference in this life. Or should he remain where he is and allow life to pass him by. You say he is successful, he has a house and good social standing. But I beg to differ, true success is finding your life purpose and becoming the best version of yourself. This is not judged by economics or material wealth. It can only be weighed by the impact you leave behind. Because Bilbo took that step he will be remembered for the difference he made in the lives of those who wanted to return to their mountain. In the same way we ask, what do we want to be said about our lives? That we lived a closed life or that we made the world a better place. We can choose.
Neo was shown that there is a red pill of sort that opens our eyes to that dream we have seen from when we were young. We all want a greater sense of cause, something to live for. We want to be connected to a passion and purpose and live the life that gives us true meaning. We all want to be part of something great, to know our place in the bigger picture. Neo is offered an opportunity to walk in his dreams, to discover his purpose and unique identity. They will show him the door. He’s the one that has to walk through it. You’re going to realize just as I did that there’s a difference between knowing the road and walking the road.
Like Morpheus said, “Let me tell you why you’re here. You are here because you know something. What you know you can’t explain. But you feel it. You’ve felt it your entire life. That there’s something wrong. You don’t know what it is, but it’s there, like a splinter in your mind driving you mad at the mention of his name. It is this feeling that has us here today, after this you may not want to go back, let’s see how deep the rabbit hole goes.
We can settle for what others say about us, our friends, family, employers or employees, our community. Or we can allow that dream inside to be activated, increase our passion and step into our life purpose. It is from this place we can live the best version of ourselves.
Neo was unplugged from everything that held him back and started on the journey of recognising his potential. Today we can do the same, take the steps to release your greater self and walk towards your destiny.
